The Calcite name is well recognised across Uji. From its place in the Upper Region's Atelier Yard, Calcite Textiles produces many of the distinctive fabrics and fashions worn throughout Uji. Yet siblings Astoria and Arran Calcite, though related to the family behind the business, spent their earliest cycles estranged from its prominence.
All that changes when a sudden turn in their family’s fortunes facilitates a move from the Lower Mid Region to the Upper Region. However, despite experiencing the textbook social ascent Korainians are taught to aspire towards, the siblings respond differently to their new environment.
Arran, a child prodigy of the horizontal harp, gains special admission to City Korai Academy — an honour he did not seek out. Meanwhile, Astoria continues her schooling in the Mid Region (much to her frustration) but finds delight in her Upper Region home and neighbours.
Through the private writings of Astoria and Arran, The Calcite Journals are RECORDS; quietly preserving the everyday realities of Upper Region living. Read along as each sibling begins to encounter the expectations hidden within Upper Region privilege, the pressure to maintain appearances, and the peculiar ways Uji’s rules seem to contort for those closest to City Korai.
Follow the Calcite siblings through new schools, new friendships and the shifting loyalties of their evolving social world as they begin to understand what their family’s ascent has afforded them, what it demands in return — and what it truly means to live as an Upper Regioner.
A horizontal harp-playing child prodigy, Arran has been told that he is destined for a bright future. Although his talent promises his entire family social mobility, society’s expectations have left this soon-to-be new-man overwhelmed and searching for his north star.
Ambitious, outspoken and deeply conscious of how others perceive her, Astoria sees her family’s move to the Upper Region as an opportunity to reinvent herself. As she navigates new friendships, old grudges and her desire to be integral to the lives of those around her, she is forced to confront the parts of herself that a new land lot cannot change.
