In the lowest Lower region, known as The Pits, City Korai exists as a distant reminder of Uji's hierarchy. Out of sight, but never out of mind.

Korainians in The Pits are industrious and resourceful. Life in the Lowest Lower Region is built through shared labour, practical skill and tightly knit communities, where kin and neighbours depend upon one another. This sense of belonging is rarely questioned.

However, for young Korainians at the bottom of The Mainland, imagining a life beyond quarried cliffs, farmlands and factories is a common pastime.

On a fifteenth birth-day, the splendour of a Maturity Ball often dazzles Lower Region new-adults. Still, many return home to the comfort of kin and a renewed sense of belonging. The Pits may offer little grandeur, but it holds their families, their histories and a way of life shaped side by side.

Yet, every now and again, there emerges a particular sort who refuse to settle for their lot in life. Feeling destined for something beyond The Pits, such longing tends to harden into resentment for the sub-region in which they were raised.

For Scion, the distance between The Pits and the Upper Region is a problem he believes he's already solved.

Diligent in his scientifics studies from an early age, Scion has never viewed The Pits with the same affection as those around him. Where his neighbours see home, shared history and community, he sees limitation: a place too small for the life he believes he was destined to have. Inspired by Rainbow, an Upper Region new-woman who Scion has studied from afar for cycles, he forms a hypothesis: that a connection with her might alter the course of his destiny. As Scion's hypothesis becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss, it is Nelli, his lifelong neighbour and confidant, who finally pushes him to embark upon his grand experiment.
